Choosing the right violin size for your child: A parent's buying and rental guide

Unlike pianos, violins come in fractional sizes from 1/16 up to full size. Learn how to size your child and when to rent versus buy.

Short answer

A violin must fit your child's arm span exactly. Playing an instrument that is too large causes neck strain and poor hand shape. Since growing children progress through three or four fractional violins before reaching full size (4/4), renting from a reputable string merchant is almost always better than buying cheap online instruments.

Renting vs. buying fractionals

Cheap violins bought from non-specialist websites are often unplayable. Bridges are cut incorrectly, pegs slip, and strings sit too high. A rented student violin from a dedicated violin shop costs more monthly but is properly set up, holds its tune, and can be traded up to the next size as your child grows.

Tracking rental contracts in Crescender

Keeping track of hire agreements, return deadlines, and accessories is a common parent hassle. The free Crescender iOS app lets you log violin instrument details, save rental shop receipts, and schedule care events directly from your iPhone. No sign-in is required to keep your child's music record organised. Android support starts in August 2026.
