How to know when your child is ready for their first acoustic guitar: A parent's buying guide
Buying the wrong size or type of guitar can discourage a young learner. Discover how to assess your child's readiness and pick the perfect instrument for their fingers.

Short answer
Do not buy a full-size steel-string guitar for a young child. They will struggle to press down the strings, their hands won't fit the neck, and they will quickly give up. Start children aged 6 to 8 on a 1/2 size classical guitar with nylon strings, which are much gentler on young fingertips.
Guitar sizing guide by age and height
- Age 5-8 (Height 100cm - 125cm): 1/2 size classical guitar.
- Age 8-11 (Height 125cm - 150cm): 3/4 size classical or acoustic guitar.
- Age 11+ (Height 150cm+): full-size acoustic or classical guitar.
Three signs your child is ready to start
- Finger dexterity: they can perform basic fine-motor tasks comfortably (like writing or using safety scissors).
- Attention span: they can sit and engage with a focused task for 15 minutes without losing interest.
- Genuine interest: they are asking to play the instrument, rather than the parent pushing it.
